Danny Scott Lane - Natural Photographer

You can feel the grounded perspective in which Danny Scott Lane photographs from. The work reflects the connection between the photographer and the moment. Often the camera can get in the way, but with Danny it feels like an extension of his being and experience of life. We asked the NYC based photographer a couple questions, and with some precise answers we glean so much beautiful perspective.

How would you define your work?

Unplanned, natural photos of people, places and things.

What are the most integral elements to your process?

Shooting on film has become pretty integral. It's hard to capture authenticity in tones and feeling with a digital camera. This is of course just my opinion.

It's also very important that the person I am photographing feels comfortable and has a laugh.

WOTW TIP: Getting into film photography? For an affordable way to start, we recommend a half frame camera with some Kodak Gold.

Your work has such beautiful colors and tone, how do you achieve this?

I've been shooting for 12 years and I think I have just discovered good combinations of film and cameras. When you shoot for a while, you also learn when not to take a photo.

I'll also admit that I tweak color in Lightroom sometimes if I get it wrong.

What can you not turn up to a shoot without?

Lately I bring my Yashica T5 to every shoot - commercial or personal. I also need my cell phone for a light meter.

What is your go-to camera set up at the moment?

Yashica T5 for point and shoot with color and Bronica 645 for black and white. I shoot them simultaneously.

What has been a favourite moment whilst shooting recently?

Twice recently, the person I was shooting had a kitten. 2 kittens within one month! Lucky me!

How do you balance creating art vs work for clients?

This is hard. I shoot for art way more often. And when I shoot for clients, I just try to maintain a similar mentality..and sometimes it works! And sometimes it doesn't!

How do you define success?

Right now I just want to make enough money so that I can have a small family and live somewhat comfortably in or near New York..and maybe travel once or twice a year.

This is not going to happen any time soon ha! So right now I am just happy to be a part of the conversation.

What would your advice be to young photographers just starting out?

Don't panic when things get bad.
