Elien Jansen - Dream Photographer

Dreaminess and femininity are the two words that come to mind when attempting to describe the world that Elien creates with her photography. We got the chance to talk to Elien about how she weaves storytelling and expression into her photography.

Why do you love photography & what does it mean to you?

Photography is a powerful medium that allows me to capture and preserve moments in time and convey emotions, stories, and ideas through visual imagery. For many photographers, including myself, the love of photography stems from the ability to express themselves creatively and document the world around me in a unique way. Photography can also be a form of therapy for me, allowing me to connect with my environment and express my emotions.

Also, for me, photography is truly my life; it consumes my every day. My mind never rests; I’m constantly pondering over it. It’s not just a hobby or a profession; it’s a passion that fuels my every waking moment.

How would you describe your work and what do you want to say with it?

My work exudes dreaminess and femininity, just like myself. I have a deep affinity for capturing female subjects in the most stunning locations. There’s something magical about showcasing the beauty, grace, and strength of women through my lens. I believe that every woman possesses a unique radiance, and it’s my mission to capture that essence in my photographs. Whether it’s a serene beach, a blooming garden, or an enchanting forest, I aim to create a whimsical backdrop that complements and enhances the feminine energy of my subjects. Through careful composition, lighting, and attention to detail, I strive to create images that evoke a sense of wonder and evoke emotions. It brings me immense joy to empower women and celebrate their individuality through my photography.

Storytelling seems to play a huge role in your photography, how do you approach storytelling with still images?

Every photo shoot is an opportunity to create a visual narrative, to transport viewers into a world of imagination and emotions. Before I even pick up my camera, I spend time brainstorming and reflecting on the message or story I want to tell. What emotions do I want to evoke? What ideas or themes do I want to explore? By answering these questions, I can begin to shape the concept for the shoot.

From choosing the right location to selecting props, wardrobe, and models, each element plays a crucial role in storytelling. Every detail is carefully considered to align with the overarching narrative. Whether it’s a romantic tale set in a fairytale forest or a bold and empowering story celebrating female strength, every shoot is an opportunity to weave a captivating story.

During the shoot itself, I guide the models, directing their poses and expressions to bring the story to life. The lighting, composition, and editing choices also contribute to the overall narrative, enhancing the mood and atmosphere.

So, whether it’s a commissioned project or a personal endeavor, storytelling is always at the forefront of my mind. It’s what drives me to create meaningful and impactful images that resonate with others.

WOTW TIP: Getting into film photography? An affordable way to start, we recommend a half frame camera with some Kodak Gold.

What are your needs as a creative?

As a creative, I have unique needs that contribute to my artistic journey, but there are some common needs shared by many of us. These include the following:

1. Inspiration: I thrive on inspiration, which can come from a multitude of sources. Whether it’s exploring nature’s beauty, immersing myself in art and culture, or simply observing everyday life, inspiration fuels my creativity and drives me to capture meaningful images.

2. Supportive Community: A supportive community plays a vital role in my growth as a photographer. Connecting with fellow photographers and artists provides opportunities for collaboration, feedback, and learning. It’s within this community that I find encouragement, inspiration, and a sense of belonging.

3. Freedom to Experiment and Take Risks: Photography is a realm where experimentation and risk-taking are essential. I need the freedom to explore new techniques, styles, and concepts without fear of judgment or failure. It’s through experimentation that I can push boundaries, evolve my craft, and discover my artistic voice.

4. Quality Equipment: Access to high-quality photography equipment is paramount. From cameras and lenses to lighting gear and editing tools, having reliable equipment ensures that I can capture the best possible images and bring my creative vision to life.

5. Varied and Inspiring Locations: As a photographer, the locations I shoot in greatly influence the outcome of my work. Having access to diverse and captivating locations allows me to create visually compelling images. Whether it’s urban landscapes, natural wonders, or unique architectural sites, each location adds depth and richness to my portfolio.

6. Subjects and Models: The availability of subjects and models is crucial for my photography. Working with a variety of individuals – from professional models to friends, family, or even strangers – allows me to capture unique perspectives and tell captivating stories. Having access to a range of subjects enriches my work and enables me to connect with different narratives.

By recognizing and addressing these needs, I can nurture my creativity, expand my skills, and create impactful photographs. Each need contributes to my artistic growth, enabling me to produce work that resonates with others and brings my vision to life.

How do you balance creating art for yourself versus art for clients?

Finding a balance between creating art for myself and catering to client needs is a constant juggling act. As a photographer, it’s crucial to maintain a fulfilling and sustainable creative life while also meeting the expectations and requirements of my clients.

One approach to this balancing act is to prioritize client work to ensure financial stability and professional growth. Meeting client needs and delivering exceptional results are essential aspects of building a successful photography business. However, it’s equally important to carve out time for personal projects that align with my artistic vision and allow for creative exploration.

What kind of commercial job allows you creative freedom?

There exist numerous commercial job opportunities that offer ample creative freedom, catering to individuals seeking outlets for self-expression. Engaging in editorial assignments, advertising campaigns, and corporate branding ventures are just a few examples of such avenues. When pursuing these opportunities, it becomes paramount to identify clients who not only resonate with your vision but also value and admire your distinctive artistic style. By forging partnerships with like-minded clients, you can foster an environment that nurtures your creativity and enables you to deliver exceptional work that aligns with your unique artistic sensibilities.

What has your key to success been?

Success in photography is a deeply personal and multifaceted concept. It is defined by individual aspirations, goals, and achievements. However, cultivating a strong work ethic, nurturing a deep commitment to one’s craft, embracing calculated risks, and staying adaptable to industry changes can significantly contribute to my journey toward realizing their unique vision of success.💞
